Toreros place 5th at Lamkin Grips SD Classic
The Torero men’s golf team recently hosted their second event of the season March 10th-11th at San Diego CC. The event was co-hosted with San Diego State with 3 of the 13 teams in the field being inside the Top 50. The Toreros shot a team score of -1 in round one with Grant shooting 74, Skyler 82, and Mathias, Taylor, Alex all carding 71. This left the Toreros in 3rd place four strokes behind the leaders. The team struggled in round two with a team score of +5. Senior Taylor Schmidt led the way with 69, which was the second lowest score of the day. The rest of round two scores were Grant 73, Alex 74, Skyler 77 and Mathias 79. After 36 holes the Toreros were in 5th place at +4 and 10 strokes back of the lead. The team shot a final round score of +5 and finished in 5th. Taylor Schmidt was the low Torero in the final round with 70, Grant and Alex 73, Skyler 77, and Mathias 79. Even though the team didn’t place as well as hoped, three Toreros finished in the top 20. Taylor Schmidt had his best career finish of T-3rd at -6 under par. Joe Carlson, Mike Bosco and Nick Baines also competed as individuals while Will Twitty had to withdraw due to a back injury.

Toreros Finish 10th at N.I.T in Tucson
After the Lamkin Grips SD Classic the Toreros headed to Tucson, AZ the following day to compete in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) hosted by the University of Arizona. This was a three day event held at Omni Tucson National Resort on the 7,262 yard Par 72 Catalina golf course. This was a great opportunity for the Toreros to move up in the rankings due to the very strong field. The field included 9 teams ranked inside the Top 60. The Toreros shot a team score of +2 in round one which left them in 8th position. Grant lead the way with a 71, Taylor 75, and Mathias, Alex, Joe all shot 73. In round 2 Grant and Alex both played solid shooting rounds of 71, Taylor 74, Mathias 74, and Joe 76. Unfortunately the team didn’t gain any spots with their second round score and would need a good final round to climb into the top 5. The team shot a final round score of +4 for a three round total +8 which placed them in solo 10th. Grant had another sub-par round of 69 to lead the Toreros on the final day while Joe finished with 73, Alex 78, Taylor and Mathias 75.

Toreros finish 6th at ASU Thunderbird Invitational
For the third event in two weeks the Toreros were back in Arizona for the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe hosted by Arizona State. The team shot -1 in round one. Joe Carlson led the way with 69, Grant 70, Alex 71, Taylor 73, and Mathias 75. This left the team in 4th and in good position to make a run with two rounds remaining. The team shot +2 in round two leaving them in 6th place heading into the final round. Taylor and Mathias rebounded nicely with 71, Alex 73, Grant and Joe 72. The team fired a final round score of +7 which left them in 6th place. Grant had another solid showing shooting a final round score of 69 and finishing T-13th. Joe, Alex and Taylor all finished with 74’s while Mathias shot 76. This wasn’t the finish the team was hoping for but still managed to beat a few of the ranked teams ahead of them. Senior Mike Bosco also competed in the event, playing as an individual and ended up shooting rounds of 77-81-76.

Redhawk Invitational up next April 7-8 at Chambers Bay GC
The Toreros head to the pacific northwest this Saturday to play in Seattle University’s event at Chambers Bay GC in University Place, WA which will host of the 2015 U.S Open. The 54 hole event will be held over two days with the first 36 holes being played on April 7th and the final round on April 8th. The 18 team field includes Long Beach State, Arizona State, Pepperdine, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Northern Colorado, Cal State Northridge, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington, North Carolina State, Northern Illinois, Nevada-Reno, Denver, Boise State, Arizona, USD, and Seattle.

The USD Golf Annual fundraiser will be held at the beautiful Shadowridge Country Club in Vista, CA on Monday April 21st. This is a great opportunity to play golf with the USD Golf team members and help support USD Golf. The day will consist of a BBQ lunch followed by a shotgun with dinner immediately following play.
