Hopefully all of you Toreros Golf fans have been enjoying your summer. For the guys on the team the summer is a time where they can take some time away from school, spend time with their families and play in tournaments to sharpen their game for the fall season. So far this summer the returning squad has put up some solid results in some big events!

Forrest plays in The Open Championship!

Junior Grant Forrest qualified for the Open Championship at Muirfield Village by winning the local qualifier with scores of 67-65. Forrest played with Mark O’Meara in the first two rounds firing 73 the first round which put him well inside the cut and in solid position in the battle for low amateur. The second round Forrest just didn’t have his A game and fired 86. Click here for article

Prior to The Open Forrest finished tied for 30th in The British Am with round of the 72-74 and made it to the 3rd round of match play. He also nearly defended his Scottish Amateur title by winning 6 matches before losing in the semi finals.

Toreros posting impressive results this summer!

 Sophomore Alex Chiarella played well at the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes first qualifying for match play with scores of 78-74 and then advanced all the way to the quarterfinals. Alex also competed in the U.S Amateur Public Links Championship and missed the cut to make match play by one shot with back to back rounds of 73. Chiarella fought off some blistering wind conditions in the Maui Open finishing in a T-3rd and taking home low amateur honors with two rounds of 74.

Senior Taylor Schmidt also qualified for match play at the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship with scores of 78-76 but was defeated in his first round match. Schmidt also participated in The Royal Oaks Invitational in Vancouver, WA and finished in 9th place with rounds of 71-76-76 and also qualified for match play in the Oregon Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club with scores of 75-73 and made it to the round of 32. Schmidt also finished in a T-17th at the Oregon Stroke Play Championship played at Emerald Valley Golf Club with rounds of 70-77-78. Schmidt also is an alternate for the US Am.

Incoming sophomore transfer Will Twitty had a nice finish at the Southwestern Amateur which was played at Desert Mountain Club where he finished with rounds of 68-75-70-72 and a T-13th.

Sophomore Skyler Finnell fired 140 in the 36 hole US Am qualifier at Pasatiempo and lost in a playoff. He is the 1st alternate.

 

 

 

 

Toreros in the Pros

Alex Ching just finished playing in the Long Beach Open where he placed in a T-40th with a four round total -7, highlighted by a second round 67. Alex’s last PGA Tour Latin America event in the Dominican Republic he finished in a T-11th at -2 and is currently 67th on the Order of Merit.

Gunner Wiebe finished in a T-5th at -11 in the Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch GC in Denver, CO. Gunner also Monday qualified and made the cut in the Web.Com in Sandy, UT where he placed in a T-50th at -10. He also placed T-8th at -3 in his last PGA Tour Latin America event in the Dominican Republic and is currently sitting 18th on the Order of Merit.  Gunner’s father, Mark Wiebe just captured the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale where he defeated Berhard Langer in a 6 hole playoff.

Berry Henson recently won the Long Beach Open with a four round total of -19 to win by three strokes. He is a member of the Asian Tour and is currently 13th on the Order of Merit.

Joe Panzeri has played in four events on the Canadian Tour so far this year and has successfully made every cut. He has finished T-20th, T-26th, T38th, and T-44th and is 40th on the money list.  Joe also just competed in the PGA Web.Com event in Boise, ID where he unfortunately missed the cut with scores of 67-71.
